Recenzii
This book is the culmination of forty years' work by Streitberger, and will be highly valued for the wealth of information that it presents, particularly in a month-by-month calendar of court revels and spectacles for the whole extent of Elizabeth's reign, and in biographical details for each of the Masters of the Revels.
Streitberger's work nevertheless represents a long-overdue historical intervention and one of the few up-to-date examinations of the pre-Tilney Revels Office we have.
W. R. Streitberger has produced an accomplished and well-written book; it should henceforth take its place among essential works for scholars of the early stage.
His conclusions significantly revise many longstanding assumptions about the Office of the Revels, those who administered it, and its transformation during Elizabeth I's long reign. The first three chapters provide biographical and chronological information that will particularly interest advanced scholars.
