Its acclaimed reference works have sold in excess of a million copies. The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library, founded in 1926, is one of the world s foremost research facilities devoted to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of materials documenting black life. With collections totalling over five million items, it serves over 50,000 researchers in its Harlem–based facilities and responds to another 40 50,000 mail and telephone reference inquiries annually.
