The second volume of The Newest Americans explains how the economic conditions in Ecuador and Guyana contributed to a brain drain as educated immigrants left their countries in search of better opportunities. Also examined is the dilemma faced by many Haitians and Guatemalans who enter the United States seeking political asylum, only to be labeled economic refugees and returned to their countries. Students will learn why Filipinos, the largest group of Asian immigrants in America today, are sometimes called the invisible immigrants, and how the diversity program (or lottery) that was established in 1990 has made Ethiopians and Ghanaians two of the fastest growing immigrant groups in some U.S. cities.
