The Non-reality of Free Will

Autor Richard Double
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 13 mar 1991
This monograph offers a new argument concerning free will and moral responsibility. Double identifies hierarchical compatibilism - a view espoused by such philosophers as Frankfurt, Neely, Watson, Levin, and Dennett - as the most plausible account of free will, showing how compatibilism can be successfully defended against incompatibilist objections. He goes on, however, to demonstrate that even the compatibilist account of free will ultimately faces insuperable objections, and concludes that free will is an essentially incoherent notion.

Recenzii

`This is a remarkable book, well-written, deeply informed and skillfully argued'Heythrop Journal
`In The Non-Reality of Free Will Double does more than simply survey the issues; he skewers every current theory (including libertarian ones) with provocative, and often novel arguments ... It is required reading for those who want to understand the current issues or to defend one of the standard theories he criticizes.'Robert Kane, Times Literary Supplement
`Double is clearly a stimulating teacher.'TE Wilkerson, Times Higher Education Supplement
`Double's deconstruction of free will is a model of closely reasoned contemporary philosophy ... lucidly written ... The chapters are well laid out, each with an introductory abstract of its argument and a concluding summary of what has been established.'Thomas W. Clark, Institute for Naturalistic Philosophy
'Richard Double offers a sustained, metaphilosophical critique of all familiar accopunts of free will. The Non-Reality of FreeWill is well worth reading. Double draws intelligently upon cognate literature in the philosophy of mind, cognitive psychology, and metaethics to construct a wide variety of competent and provocative arguments on behalf of his bold thesis.'Mind, Vol. 101, No. 402, April 1992
`The book is ... clearly written and is structured in a way which should make it readily accessible to undergraduates.'Philosophical Quarterly
