The Octopus Virus

Autor Roger Parkes
en Limba Engleză Paperback
It is 1962 and the height of the Cold war tensions between East and West, when a well planned Soviet conspiracy makes its way into the hands of the British Secret Service. Initiated by the actions of the European Nations, a retaliatory course set by Russia with the aim to instigate a global conflict seems all but inevitable - only nobody knows what form this counter attack will take. In one final act of sabotage, the Soviets hatch a plan that will give them the opportunity to initiate a nuclear strike against the U.S. while protecting themselves from the possibility of future European retaliation in the process. To the world at large the Soviets appear to have the perfect excuse to protect themselves and so create a third world war. But Polly Bottomley, recently promoted and Britain's youngest ever MP, catches wind of the impending uprising thanks to her new position and contacts in the Foreign Office. Unlike her action-oriented peers however, she believes that the Russians can be brought to heel using diplomacy to point out the failings of their ideology. Despite her best efforts at a peace conference she chairs in Moscow, the Soviets continue their intrusion into Europe. She believes the European Nations should opt for a united front against them and delivers a tough ultimatum to them in a speech from the United Nations in New York. Her husband Daniel sees the Russian threat from a completely different perspective, believing that they'll look to attack the US as soon as the opportunity arises. He is contacted by the Americans concerned that Russian sleeper cells may be operating in Britain. What he and Polly uncover is a frightening almost terrifying scenario being hatched by the Soviets, brilliant in concept but with the prospects of a disastrous conclusion, namely an all out nuclear conflict with the inevitable results that would follow. Can Daniel and Polly determine if there is a connection between the Russian sleeper cells and the European National Party? What are the Soviets actually planning that will threaten world peace. And will Daniel be able to rescue Polly before she is disposed of when the Soviets finally abduct her? Will the Russian agent, who so tormented and abused Polly ten years ago finally get his way with her before she is disposed of by Soviet agents? Following on from The Secrets Container and The Traffic Light Syndrome, The Octopus Virus is the thrilling conclusion to the author's high-concept Cold War trilogy. With the Soviet threat heading towards the point of no return and espionage infiltrating every element of international affairs, it's do or die for Daniel and Polly Bottomley as they attempt to flush out the bubbling global turmoil once and for all. But can they pull it off without losing themselves in the process? Will their love and devotion for each other finally prevail as the Soviets try to dispose of them once and for always? The author has plans for a fourth novel with the same leading characters and hopes to begin work on a second trilogy with new characters and new story themes in 2017.
