Masterful.....should be required reading for anyone in or from Oklahoma. John Dwyer is an Oklahoma treasure. His approach to writing history is unique and unexcelled. -William R. Carmack, Regents Professor and Chairman Emeritus of Communications, University of Oklahoma
The best Oklahoma history book ever. Dwyer has dug out the truth in many places where it has not been dug out before. He has gone down to the bedrock of Oklahoma history. He wrote the book I was hoping he would write. Every generation of Oklahomans needs their own recounting of Oklahoma history. This is ours. Well done. -Bob Blackburn, Executive Director 1999-2021 Oklahoma Historical Society
Notă biografică
Dr. Bob Blackburn, longtime Executive Director of the Oklahoma Historical Society, called OKLAHOMANS 1, which chronicled ancient times through statehood, "The best book on Oklahoma History ever." Dr. James Caster, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Central Oklahoma, describes Vol. 2, covering statehood into the 2020s, as "Monumental...epic...hypnotically readable."
In addition to OKLAHOMANS 1, John's Dust Bowl/World War II novel SHORTGRASS and its sequel, World War II aviation epic MUSTANG, both won national, Fort Worth-based Will Rogers Medallion Awards for Western literature. The OKLAHOMAN newspaper ranked MUSTANG as the best-selling fiction book in the state after its 2019 release. Oklahoma hall of fame journalist Patrick McGuigan called it, "The greatest American war novel since THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE.
John's 700-page Civil War saga THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES: AMERICA'S UNCIVIL WAR, now in its fifth printing, was declared, "The best textbook of any subject for the high school, preparatory academy or junior college I've ever read," by UCLA historian Roger McGrath.
John was born in Dallas, Texas and grew up in Duncan, Oklahoma. He wrote for various newspapers before publishing THE DALLAS/FORT WORTH HERITAGE newspaper from 1992-2000. He taught high school history from 2000-2006, and History and Ethics at Southern Nazarene University from 2006-2021. His OKLAHOMA GOLD! program features compelling stories from the OKLAHOMANS books and is carried on several Oklahoma radio stations.
