Recenzii
The target has clearly been to cover background and content of literature as much as practicable in countries with a German language element ... In this the compilers have succeeded admirably.
incredibly comprehensive reference work ... What continues to impress most, quite apart from this amazing range, is the skilful condensation of a wealth of factual information into lucid and concise statements that establish relevant facts almost in passing ... We are indeed indebted to Henry and Mary Garland for their defence of that much broader vision that keeps alive that essential awareness of traditions that have shaped the little most of us are still familiar with ... a richness of information that bears the mark of a long-sustained and nurtured love for the study of German literature in its historical, philosophical, and social context ... Used well, it will foster ... intelligent and sympathetic interest in the study of German literature which, fuelled by insatiable curiosity, would handsomely repay the debt of gratitude we owe to its editors.
