The Penance

Brogan's pathway through life was never going to be easy. Born into poverty with her family misjudged and shunned, her life descends into chaos with the early death of her mother.

Homeless, her vulnerability absolute. Thus she seeks help from a respected and seemingly sympathetic member of society, thus begins a life of torment and pain and a hazardous fraught journey through a world of exploitation.

Set in the early nineteenth century the tale is a timeless one of a young woman who is, manipulated and used by those with power. While it is a story of the dehumanising effects of systemic abuse on the innocent, it also offers a sense of hope and of justice to those who are rendered powerless.
