This is the story of an american world war II military pilot who, some years after the end of the war, arrives in Rome as a tourist. Though the trip is apparently for pleasure, there is another, more deeply hidden reason. During his short stay in the eternal city, a chance meeting produces an instant and spontaneous friendship between him and two of Rome's young sightseeing tour guides: a gregarious journalist and a female archaeologist. Following his return to the United States, he begins a long confidential correspondence with the girl. However, he struggles to have the courage to confess to her a secret that their destinies in the distant years of the world war II were crossed, scoring in a dramatic way, their current lives. More than two decades later, the young journalist, who now has moved onto career, with a successful company and has a family of his own, receives a misterious notice that a notary in a neighboring city has a package addressed to him: a package that has held for ten years. Within the package he discovers a long letter addressed to him by his old friend. He wonders if he will learn the secrets that the man kept for many years. Will his friend, listening to the voice of his coscience, finally find the serenity of his soul?
