The sounds of sirens were bouncing around in my head as I began to drift off into another world. I knew someone had shot me. But why? Was it because of my investigation into corruption at the highest level of our city's government, or was it because I had discovered the truth about the jewels stolen from the statue of the Holy Mother Mary in the Basilica? The answer had to be in the coded message the elderly priest gave me. But what did it mean? Was his twisted cipher a villainous threat or a divine warning from God above? As my blood began to pool beneath my body and life was slipping away, all I could do was to think about my family. Was my son, Ronnie, the next to be injured? I know that my glorious wife, Helen, could have never imagined that her stringent religious practices, based on the doctrines taught by the priests from the Holy Basilica, would bring our family to this point. As the sheriff of this community, how could I have been so blind? I know this all began before I was elected, but still, I should have known that something was amiss from my first day on the job. I simply pray that someone will pay with their freedom for all that has occurred. But the question is who? Who could be so desperate they felt the need to shoot me?
