Quite different from the first instalment, so much so that I have a hard time comparing them. While The Quantum Magician is a fun heist adventure, The Quantum Garden is a more personal and in-depth exploration of character. Don't get me wrong, it has action, but that's not the focus here. Ayen was the star of the show for me, her story being deeply moving and emotional. I'm so glad I discovered this author. In the final chapter, Künsken hints at a third book in the series, that I can't wait to read. It seems though that he decided to write two prequels, exploring the formation of a major political faction in this universe. I can't complain; judging by these two, they're going be to be awesome too. If you're having second thoughts about reading this series, don't. It has so much going for it that you're bound to find something you'll like. Most probably a lot.

Derek Kunsken's short fiction has appeared in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, Beneath Ceaseless Skies and multiple times in Asimov's Science Fiction. His stories have been adapted into audio podcasts, reprinted in various Year's Best anthologies, and translated into multiple languages. They have also been short-listed for various awards, and won the Asimov's Readers Award in 2013. The Canadian-based author's work has been translated into French and Mandarin.
