After the Civil War in Soviet Russia, there were many homeless youths. They had to be brought into socialist society and re-educated through collective socialist labor and education. Makarenko describes his experiences in leading the Gorky Colony, one of the most successful colonies for homeless youths. This is the first of a three-volume set.
