Ellen Wood, better known as Mrs Henry Wood, had an international success with her 1861 novel 'East Lynne' and went on to write over 30 highly successful works. Many of these were serialised in The Argosy, a literary magazine she bought in 1867, before publication in book form. 'The Shadow of Ashlydyat' was first published in 1863.
