Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But unlike his four brothers and sisters, Louis can't trumpet joyfully. In fact, he can't even make a sound. And since he can't trumpet his love, the beautiful swan Serena pays absolutely no attention to him.

E. B. White was born in the USA. He travelled about trying all sorts of jobs before he joined theNew Yorkermagazine and became a writer. In 1970 he was awarded the prestigious Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal forStuart LittleandCharlotte's Weband in honour of his outstanding contribution to children's literature. E. B. White died in 1985.
