The USSR in Third World Conflicts: Soviet Arms and Diplomacy in Local Wars 1945–1980

Autor Bruce D. Porter
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 24 iul 1986
This is a thorough and sophisticated study of one of the most critical current issues in world politics. Bruce Porter examines Soviet policy and behaviour in Third World conflicts in the postwar period, focusing particularly on five examples: the Yemeni civil war, the Nigerian civil war, the Yom Kippur war, the Angolan civil war, and the Ogaden war. Aiming to illuminate various complex tactical and operational aspects of the USSR's policy in local conflicts, the author draws on a wide and eclectic range of sources. He pays close attention to the Soviet role as arms supplier and diplomatic actor in relation to both US policy and the dynamics of the local conflict, and he concludes with a careful consideration of the effectiveness of Soviet policy and of the implications for the United States.

Recenzii

'Written with clarity, good reasoning and style, Porter presents five case studies of Soviet intervention (in Yemen, Nigeria, and Yom Kippur War, Angola and Somalia-Ethiopia), applies various litmus tests, draws comparisons, and reaches some unassailable conclusions. The best book yet in this field.' Foreign Affairs
'Overall, The USSR in Third World Conflicts contributes to our better understanding of the nature of Soviet behaviour in local Third World conflicts and, more generally, of Soviet policy in Asia and Africa … Porter's study is an excellent analysis of the role of Soviet military power in Third World conflicts. Anyone concerned with Soviet international behaviour or with Third World security questions will find it indispensable reading.' Soviet Studies
'Dr. Porter's study is by far the best available today on Soviet policy toward the Third World. It is detailed, balanced, and demonstrates excellent judgement on an extremely controversial subject. I highly recommend it to all interested in this crucial area of Soviet foreign policy and of Soviet-American relations.' William E. Griffith, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
'Bruce Porter's book is a superb account and analysis of how the Soviet Union has escalated its military involvement in Third World conflicts and is indispensable reading for anyone concerned with the Soviet role in world affairs.' Samuel P. Huntington, Harvard University
