The Civil War was not confined to only the eastern portion of the United States. Grant had plans to take Mobile, Alabama and use it to stage actions against Galveston and other parts of Texas. During the Battle of Mobile Bay, Union forces were able to take Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan, but not the city. Battles would be fought in Mississippi, Northern Louisiana and Arkansas. The Battle of Fort Pillow, the Battle of Pea Ridge and the second Battle of Sabine Pass all contributed to the lore of the War between the States
