Notă biografică
John Viele is a retired naval officer and a former submarine commander now living on Cudjoe Key. A lifelong interest in history and a deep love for the Florida Keys led him to research and write Keys history stories for local newspapers and magazines. He is the author of the first two volumes in the Florida Keys series, A History of the Pioneers and True Stories of the Perilous Straits, also published by Pineapple Press.
Descriere
In the 1850s, the heyday of the Keys wreckers--daring seamen who saved lives and property from ships cast up on the Florida reef--ships were piling up on the reef at the rate of nearly one a week. Salvaging these wrecks was a highly competitive and hazardous gamble of the lives, limbs, and vessels of the wreckers against an often elusive gain.
