The defining statement that turned Paul around came from the Lord at Damascus. This revelation nurtured the glory of God that slowly grew in Paul's heart and mind. Paul carried no pattern of ministry to promote. Rather, he was gripped by a broad perspective on God's kingdom that went well beyond the boundaries of provincial Judaism, boundaries he ferociously had protected. To follow this call, Paul had to face his own misconception that God's covenant called for Jewish exclusivity, and recognize that God wants all nations included in his kingdom. The fundamental and unchanging pattern for the history of the church is this: God's love for the world in offering salvation to sinners, and the call to his people to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. Yet sadly, God's people exhibit an unchanging pattern of reluctance to participate in his plan. The people of God have a distinct tilt to going no further than to other people of God. As neglect of the lost nations grips the church today, so a reversal similar to Paul's must unlock the movement of the contemporary church. Paul's commission was meant to have lasting influence upon the church for all times. The church today needs to hear his call to the universal offer of grace.
