This is the story of Harry Pike, a young Jewish Zamler (collector) who has the ability--like others in his community--to absorb the bad luck of others around him. But as Harry's life becomes intertwined with his friend Abner's, Abner's love of baseball puts Harry in the difficult spot of whether to use his talents to help his friend or to stay true to the traditions of his faith.
