To Try Her Fortune in London: Australian Women, Colonialism, and Modernity

Angela Woollacott
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 13 sep 2001
To Try Her Fortune in London is the first study to consider white colonials as part of the colonial presence at the heart of the empire. Between 1870 and 1940 tens of thousands of Australian women were drawn to London, their imperial metropolis and the centre of the publishing, art, theatrical, and educational worlds. Even more Australian women than men made their pilgrimage 'home', seeking opportunities beyond those avaliable to them in the Australian colonies or dominion. Through this lens, Woollacott explores previously unexamined connections between whiteness, colonial status, gender, and modernity.

Recenzii

Angela Woollacott has produced an impressively-detailed and wide-ranging study of women from a white settler colony, an aspect of colonialism that has received scant attention until now.
To Try Her Fortune in London will fascinate Australians and non-Australians alike: it is at once a detailed work of meticulous scholarship, a lively insight into the lives of a particular group of London women at the beginning of the twentieth century, and a ground-breaking contribution to colonial studies.
Woollacott's comprehensive study provides rich evidence that a newfound freedom and mobility allowed ambitious Australian women to have an influence in London disproportionate to their number, and this work will prove an influential contribution to our understanding of London, imperialism and the Australian abroad.
This book is an important contribution to a growing literature on the international dimensions of the Australian women's movement, as well as the recent interest in relationships within the British Empire/Commonwealth.
