Topwater fishing is a science. I have developed specific patterns that are reliable and enable me to consistently catch smallmouth on topwater baits. Most anglers make the mistake of using the same bait and using the same retrieve. As long as an angler has an open mind and is able to adapt his topwater presentation to water temperature, weather conditions, and most of all the attitude of the smallmouth, that angler can catch fish.
