In this annual report, Traffic Safety Facts 1996: A Compilation of Motor Vehicle Crash Data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System and the General Estimates Systems, the National Highway Traffic Safety administration (NHTSA) presents information from two data systems Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and National Automotive Sampling System/General Estimates System (GES)} to create a single source of motor vehicle crash statistics about traffic crashes of all severities, from those that result in property damage to those that result in the loss of human life.
