These studies arising from a Barcelona conference in 2007 look primarily at the nature and functioning of the Roman Empire, at recurrent issues of Romanisation and colonisation, at the role of the military, and at society and citizenship. Adaptations to landscape and environments are a particular theme, and appropriately many of the case studies centre on Spain. There are also comparative studies with ancient China and the USA.
