Acting deputy manager Julie (BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee Jane Horrocks, Absolutely Fabulous, Little Voice) struggles to assert her authority and fails at almost every attempt to make a good impression on store manager Gavin (Jason Watkins, Being Human). She also has something of a crush on Gavin, who manages to rebuff her clumsily executed flirtations - that is, if he's aware of them at all. Julie's many weaknesses include a significant lack of people skills, a source of amusement for butcher double-act Andy (Mark Addy, Game of Thrones, The Full Monty) and Kieran (Nick Blood, Material Girl). While Andy is a dedicated to the art of butchery, his young apprentice Kieran is bored of chops, mince and ribs. Similarly, at the checkout, a fed-up Katie (Chanel Cresswell, This Is England) dreams of going travelling. The only good thing about her job in Valco is the clear chemistry she has with Kieran.
