Alaska is famous for many things--the Aurora Borealis, lofty snow-capped mountain ranges, devastating earthquakes, the Iditarod, and even bizarre reality tv. Another not-so-well kept secret is the incredible fishing that takes place in remote locations across the state. Trustworthy Liars is a fishing memoir, but more than that it is about the friendships that develop over a quarter-century of adventures as three lifelong friends get together each summer for 10-12 days of non-stop unguided fishing and exploring the lakes and rivers of southwest Alaska near Bristol Bay. This is not necessarily a guidebook to successful fishing. In fact, many of the stories illustrate the pitfalls of headstrong individuals who rely on their own devices for adventure and success. As the title implies, the stories are often humorous accounts of what happens when one-up-man-ship becomes the not-so-hidden agenda. The often overlooked and sometimes mundane details of survival are illustrated in a number of stories including the perils of flying in a small plane and avoiding bears who fish the same waters. But in the end, it is a collection of stories of men who are true friends.
