Tv Antiquity: The Television Series

Autor Sylvie Magerstadt
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 13 mar 2019
TV antiquity is the first study to focus on representations of ancient Greece and Rome throughout television history. A number of books have explored antiquity in cinema, but its depiction on TV screens has largely been overlooked. This obscures the fact that the medium offers a unique perspective on the ancient world. The book traces the development of fictional representations of antiquity from the staged black-and-white shows of the 1950s and 1960s to the most recent digital spectacles. Its central argument is that serial television, with its multiplicity of characters and extended narratives, is often better suited to the complex mythic and historic plots of antiquity. Consequently, the book focuses on multipart television dramas rather than made-for-TV feature films, exploring the specific narrative and aesthetic possibilities of this format. Its case studies range from popular serials like I, Claudius (1976) and Rome (2005-8) to lesser-known productions like The Caesars (1968) and The Eagle of the Ninth (1976). Each one illuminates broader issues in the decade under consideration. TV antiquity highlights the creative interplay between television genres and production environments, as well as illustrating how cultural and political events have influenced the representations of antiquity in television. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars in film and media, cultural studies and classics.
