This series tells the story of a soldier's life from the rookie stage until he has qualified for an officer's commission. * * * * In "Uncle Sam's Boys as Sergeants," Hal Overton is accused of stealing money from a fellow soldier and has to live with this cloud on his reputation; then he and Terry Noll participate in their first military tournament in which a battalion of "Ours" takes part at Denver, and the all but tragic results of that tournament; followed by a soldier hunting-party up in the Rockies, in which Hal and Noll thoroughly distinguish themselves both as hunters and as soldiers and commanders when they run afoul of a criminal gang hiding from the civilian authorities. * * * * In "Uncle Sam's Boys in the Philippines" Hal and Terry experience their first overseas posting, where intrigue, plots, and shady characters abound. It is only by their quick thinking and unfailing courage that they escape individual peril and assist in putting down a native uprising led by a one of the old-time chiefs-a "datto"-who lives on plunder and blackmail money from rich plantation owners.
