The limerick has great appeal; the perfect vehicle for conveying bawdy, erotic humor. It is also a form native to the English language; early examples can be found in the works of Shakespeare (1564-1616) and even some earlier works written in limerick meter. The word "limerick" itself derives from the Irish town of Limerick.
