Scientific Foundation
Students come into this course with a lot of preconceived ideas about what psychology is and a key part of the introductory course is for students to understand the scientific basis of the discipline. Morris/Maisto present a scientific, accurate, and thorough overview of the essential concepts of psychology in engaging language that the average reader can easily understand. The NEW edition of Morris/Maisto has over 1000 new references, most from 2004 to present.

Three Unifying Basic Concepts:
  1. Psychology is a science that is rapidly evolving: The 8th edition contains more than 1,000 new research references, two-thirds of which are from 2004-2007. More than a dozen new "Cutting Edge" boxes that describe recent research and challenges our current understanding of various content areas.
  2. Human behavior and thought are diverse, varied, and affected by culture: Increased attention to diversity is found in every chapter, from the expanded discussion of human diversity in Chapter 1; to the language, thought and culture discussed in Chapter 7; through to cultural differences in psychological disorders which is covered in Chapter 12.
  3. The study of psychology involves active thinking, questioning, and problem solving: Dozens of new "Thinking Critically About" exercises have been added which encourage the reader to engage in genuine critical thinking by questions the methods used to gather data, considering possible alternative explanations for findings, and imagining further research that might shed additional light on the phenomenon under study.
Chapter 1 introduces five enduring issues which cut across and unit all subfields of psychology. These enduring issues are revisited in each subsequent chapter. By exploring these enduring issues within the context of specific topics, Understanding Psychology 8e shows the surprising unity and coherence within the diverse and exciting science of psychology.
  1. Person-Situation: To what extent is behavior caused by processes that occur inside the person, such as thoughts, emotions, and genes? In contrast, to what extent is behavior caused or triggered by factors outside the person, such as incentives, cues in the environment, and the presence of other people?
  2. Nature-Nurture: Is the person we become a product of innate, inborn tendencies, or a reflection of experience and upbringing?
  3. Stability-Change: Are the characteristics we develop in childhood more or less permanent and fixed, or do we change in predictable (and unpredictable) ways over the course of our lives?
  4. Diversity-Universality: Because we are all human, each person is like every other person. But is some respects, each of us is like no other person. Thus, anywhere humans exist there will be both similarity and diversity.
  5. Mind-Body: How are mind and body connected? Many psychologists are fascinated by the relationship between what we experience, such as thoughts and feelings, and biological processes, such as activity in the nervous system.

Helpful Student Study Aids:
  • Talking Graphics--helps students understand how the graphics relate to the material they are covering.
  • Apply your Understanding--questions have been added to "Check Your Understanding" quiz section at the end of each major section to help students review and retain concepts, as well as apply what they've learned to real-life situations.
  • Understanding Ourselves--provides practical information on how students can apply psychology to their own lives
  • MyPsychLab--NEW to this edition of Understanding Psychology, MyPsychLab is an easy-to-use online resource that allows instructors to assess student progress and adapt course material to meet the specific needs of the class. MyPsychLab enables students to diagnose their progress by completing an online self-assessment pre-test. Based on the results of this test, each student is provided with a customized study plan, including a variety of tools to help them fully master the material.
MyPsychLab then reports the self-assessment results to the instructor, as individual student grades as well as an aggregate report of class progress. Based on these reports, the instructor can adapt course material to suit the needs of individual students or the class as a whole.
    • Accurate Assessment: MyPsychLab offers robust self-assessment tests to determine each student's mastery of key content areas. Organized by major section or chapter, these diagnostic tests contain a large base of questions that are different from those in the text-specific test bank and other supplements. Different kinds of questions are used for pre- and post-tests, including multiple choice, text match, ranking, fill in the blank, and drag and drop.
    • Reporting: MyPsychLab's easy-to-use reporting system delivers instant feedback to students and provides instructors with reports of class and student performance. Diagnostic test results are reported to students allowing them to recognize the areas in which they need extra practice. Instructors receive an aggregate of overall class performance and may also view test results at the individual student level. Since MyPsychLab calculates and reports test results automatically, instructors can closely monitor student progress without investing any additional time.
    • Focused Instruction: MyPsychLab enables instructors to efficiently adapt course content based on actual student and class performance. MyPsychLab analyzes each student's diagnostic test results, assigns each student specific exercises designed to help with the content they have yet to master, and reports these assignments to the instructor via a gradebook. MyPsychLab's aggregate report provides a valuable "snapshot" of class performance that allows instructors to direct their attention to the content areas in which the class as a whole is struggling. MyPsychLab provides instructors with a wealth of supplemental teaching materials specific to these content areas including additional lecture material, video clips, and classroom activities. For added flexibility, these materials may be downloaded by instructors for classroom use or made available online for student use.
