In an off-center comic novel, Mutt Jeansonne, a befuddled mystic living with his ancient dog Fred in a cardboard box under a New Orleans highway overpass, is adopted by a transgender Bourbon street stripper. Mutt is inspired by a newfound sense of self, and proceeds to transmit hope and a new feeling of belonging to the below-the-radar population of the Crescent City in a mad chain of out-of-control events. An enlightened scavenger on the trash pile of civilization, Mutt values most those individuals considered by society to be worthless -- the misfits, the outcasts, the useless, the outlaws. To him, they are the true indicators of the health or deterioration of a culture. Mutt instinctively knows that these individuals are inevitably the most deeply "human", and as an added side benefit, they are invariably the most fun.Besides the otherworldly aura of the place, the actual neighborhoods of New Orleans also serve as a principal character in "Unimportant People".
