On the borders of the Civil War; thirteen-year old Salina Sice watches her father be taken away to fight in the Confederate army. She worry's for her mother, and she is heartbroken when she has to bid farewell to the most precious friend she has ever had. She has known the Professor most of her life, yet the man's past is shrouded in mystery. Her life begins to crumble when the Professor sets off towards the front lines in search of his family at the same time her father goes to war. Is her family falling apart? Will she ever see them again?
