Poor slum dwellers are faced with manifold risks in India's cities. Based on a novel synthesis of sociological, cultural, and planning theories, this study approaches the communication of risks from a socio-cultural perspective by taking into account the dimensions of power, justice, fairness, and trust, as well as knowledge and rationality. It thus contributes to a better understanding of urban risk construction of poor communities in India in contrast to prevailing notions of urban authorities.
