Waking Giants: The Presence of the Past in Modernism

Autor Herbert N. Schneidau
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 oct 1991
Schneidau's concern is with the way in which Modernism, named for its avant-garde propaganda, reveals itself to be dominated by a keen awareness, usually joyous, of the possibilities of the past recurring in the present. He argues that this idea represents a significant nexus in Modernism, an illuminating connection that explains some otherwise puzzling relationships.

Recenzii

'Briefly: Publish it!... The organisation is cunning. Schneidau makes his constitutive points via Ulysses, which is widely known. He then springs two surprises: Hardy and Forster as precursors whom the Modernists found, for different reasons, congenial. That's followed by a chapter on The Secret Agent as Nightmare: not only the best pages on that novel I've read, but an illuminating stage in the book's overall argument.' Hugh Kenner, John Hopkins University
