This is the madcap story of The Devil, a cosmic entity with no religious attachment, who foresees impending disenchantment from his playground on earth and proposes to transfigure his essence into human form through the metaphysical aid of a sinister doctor, Julius Vandertramp. Meanwhile, a disabled machinist, Jack Leslie, begins hearing The Devil's voice in his head through the daily drone of a belt sander. Outraged, he goes on a cross country crusade to foil The Devil, and in the process he encounters a humorous cast of characters leading up to his showdown with The Devil in Duluth, Minnesota.
