Today's warehouse workers have physically demanding occupations. Warehouse workers face demands from various physical and physiological factors, and the workers feel the impact. There are more than 945,000 employees who work in warehouses throughout the United States. Besides sudden acute accidental injuries, chronic injuries, caused by repetitive motion and awkward postures, occur as well and can be very serious. These injuries are quietly the 'big money' claims for many warehousing and distribution companies. Warehouse workers face an assortment of physically demanding tasks: heavy lifting, bending, stooping, climbing, and gripping, placing them at risk of serious injury. The physically demanding nature of this work helps to explain why injuries, such as strains, sprains, and work-related musculoskeletal disorders, are so prevalent. These different injuries can occur in any warehouse, to any worker, and at any time. Many companies are turning to the science of ergonomics to help address these issues and make the workplace a better place to work.
