We All Sleep in the Same Room

Autor Paul Rome
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 4 noi 2013
As Tom Claughlin -- a husband, recent father, and long-time advocate for New York City's workers -- becomes increasingly rattled by domestic life inside a one bedroom apartment, he plunges further into the case of a haunted former receptionist, using it as a way to get closer to the firm's newest intern, and unwittingly pledging his own worth on its outcome. Playing out on two fronts, home and work, the drama is set in motion when new characters emerge in each: a young male baby-sitter stealing the affection of Tom's wife and son and the receptionist seeking justice and vindication. Framed by four months in the fall of 2005, a simmering family and office story slowly unravels into something, more unusual, surreal, and ambiguous.
"We All Sleep in the Same Room" blends the traditional intimacy and immediacy of private-eye noir-style with the humorous, obsessive, digressive, observations of modern realism. Below a surface that is both touching and disturbing, optimistic, and cynical, is a sustained meditation on family and work, responsibility, and abandon -- and the transformative and destructive impact of beauty and death on an otherwise moral life.

Recenzii

Longlisted for the 2014 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for debut fiction

"A powerful debut by a writer who has almost preternaturally insightful things to say about all that is... Rome echoes Paul Auster in his clean, well-lighted prose… A cultivated style that is beautiful in its understated elegance — sculptural even."
— Michael Abolafia, HTML Giant

"A New York novel… all the more memorable for its originality… it touches upon the dark places of dreams and memory, or the oddness of observing and interacting with strangers in a large city."
— Kristen Felicetti, Electric Literature

"The story of We All Sleep in the Same Room takes us through merely four months, but has enough incident for a lifetime. This book is a powerful symphony of melancholy and wisdom."
— Howard Norman, author of The Bird Artist

"Lyrical and haunting... the debut of an important voice."
— Adam Wilson, author of Flatscreen

"Raw, spare… eerily calm… like watching storm clouds roll in over midtown: the blue between the buildings goes gray-black, the traffic lights seem to grow brighter, the hard rain is felt even before it falls."
— Justin Taylor, author of Flings

"Rome revels in some genuinely sinister imagery... exquisite, exacting."
— Justin Hickey, Open Letters Monthly

"A book which stands comparison to The Ice Storm, Disgrace and Revolutionary Road… As in real life, no one is completely at fault, or completely innocent."
— Catherine Murphy, Bookivorous

"Rome writes with the maturity of a seasoned novelist and the energy of a brilliant first time author. I could not put it down."
— Dawn Skorczewski, author of An Accident of Hope
