After a disaster along the Ohio River robs him of his father's life and company, twelve-year-old Joel Libben decides to continue westward toward the plot of land his father had bought and which was to have become their new home. On his journey, he finds that his determination and courage are severely tested. Can he survive in the wilderness alone?
