It's 1935, Calcutta India. Among other occupations Jonathan Prosper describes himself as a Confidential Agent, and one of his clients has been brutally murdered. The local police are not very interested. The client's wife employs Prosper to find the murderer, a case that involves Prosper in Bengali religious and union politics, life in a small Indian outstation, and a lost legion of the British army
