Kayla has everything it seems--great looks, a promising career as a ceramics designer, more men than she wants, and yet--as a female artist she faces a constant battle to gain respect and recognition from her male colleagues, who regard her merely as a sex object. Crushed by the failure of her first marriage and then the breakup of a passionate relationship, she struggles to rebuild her life as a single woman in Greenwich Village. Caught up in the conflict between her parents' expectations for a "nice" Jewish girl and the new freedoms of the early women's lib movement, Kayla vows, "No more men. I don't have to validate my existence through a man." Her life changes when her innovative designs win her a grant to develop a creative commercial ceramics program for a kibbutz in Israel, an opportunity to escape her now dreary Village scene and its wanna-be's. The quasi-military kibbutz in the Negev desert is an entirely new environment where she meets a platoon of girl soldiers, a womanizing commander, kibbutzniks and Arab snipers and discovers the Haifa art world. Most intriguing perhaps, is the arrival of a handsome American tour leader. A new love interest? Will Kayla discover where her true love is hiding? We feel with her as she struggles with her attraction to superficial, flamboyant deceivers in bad relationships. And all the while Kayla ponders an existential problem: Is a life alone the only way to find success and satisfaction as an artist? Must she sacrifice her independence and her dream of a fulfilling relationship to remain true to herself? Above all- where IS love?
