The ancient crime of treason posed legal, political and intellectual problems for the United States from its conception through the Civil War. This book demonstrates that although treason law was conflicted and awkward, the idea of treason gave recognizable shape to abstract ideas of loyalty, betrayal, allegiance and political obligation.
