In 1915, when Cather was 42, she published the first edition of The Song of the Lark. in 1937, she revised and republished the novel. The two editions were published before and after a significant change for Cather, reflected in her statement: "the world broke in two in 1922 or there abouts" (Not Under Forty, v).
