'Without Favour or Affection' follows the fortunes of Pc Alan Pendle, a ten year veteran Traffic Officer in a large City Police Force in the North of England and that of his nemesis, 'Midnight' Lyburn, pimp, drug dealer and murderer. Lyburn is released from Holdthorpe prison. After five years away from the streets, he once called his own, he is keen to re-establish himself as the main player in the 'Badlands', a rundown area of the City. Usurped during his enforced absence, he enters into a spree of violent criminality in an effort to both rid himself of his rivals and rebuild his empire. Constable Alan Pendle joins the Police in 1975 and is posted to Broughton, a small rural market town. After two years he transfers to the City. His tale is one of the macabre, interspersed with moments of humour and compassion. It provides a dark and unnerving 'warts and all' description of policing in a large northern City. Spanning a decade between the 1970's and 80's the fates of both protagonists will become irrevocably and horrifically entwined, culminating in the ultimate downfall of one or the other.
