Beecher (1800-78) was an American educator known for her forthright opinions on female education and her strong belief that women have inherent qualities that make them the preferred sex as teachers. In this collection of addresses published in 1872 she examines the plight of women, particularly among the lower classes, and puts forward the case that women could best influence society as mothers and teachers and should not be corrupted by the evils of politics.
