Worlds Apart: A Textbook in Planetary Sciences: Textbook in Planetary Sciences

Autor Guy Consolmagno Martha Schaefer
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 mar 1994

Designed to be accessible to those with a strong general (not professional) interest in planetary science, this volume explores the various aspects of the solar system planet by planet. Along the way, it illustrates by example how science is done, and constantly goes beyond the issue of merely What do we know, to ask such questions as What motivates our questions?" and "How do we go about finding the answers?" Begins each chapter with a purely descriptive section about a planet; then includes two sections on topics that are related to the planet in question (e.g., atmospheric chemistry and Venus; the generation of magnetic fields and Jupiter). Later chapters consider more difficult topic such as planetary satellites, comets and the solar wind, and the origin of the solar system. Confines the use of integral calculus and most derivations to separate boxes, and reviews basic concepts of physics and chemistry, in boxes, as necessary. For undergraduate students and general readers interested in planetary science.

Caracteristici

  • each chapter is devoted to a particular planet or other solar system object and includes descriptions of the methods used by planetary scientists to study them.
  • complete coverage of usual topics like planetary surfaces and atmospheres and celestial mechanics, as well as of topics most other texts do not cover, like the sun, solar wind, magnetic fields, interplanetary dust, the dynamics of the interplanetary medium, and the three body problem.
  • shows the connections between planetary science and the math and science that students may already have learned by providing algebraic equations, calculus reviews, and separate boxes with background material for further information.
  • explores the broad philosophical issues behind planetary science, such as why we do not believe in UFOs, how we define life when searching for evidence of life in space, and how scientists' philosophical outlooks affect the way they do their work.
