Notă biografică

Eric Carle is the creator of many beloved books about animals, birds and insects, but he says that he feels particularly fond of Hermit Crab, the hero of this book. Perhaps this is because he was born in the month of June, under the astrological sign of the Crab. People born under this sign are said to be both creative and sensitive; they love their homes and gardens, and like to withdraw there when the outside world is stressful. They also like to surround themselves with beautiful things. Hermit Crab and Eric Carle seem to share many of these traits. Even more coincidental is the fact that while he was working on this book, Mr. Carle was planning to move out of his beautiful but secluded home in the countryside to another, more conveniently located one -- a big house that was empty but full of exciting possibilities! he and his wife now live in Northampton, Massachusetts. Mr. Carle says this book is about beauty, nature, symbiosis and adjusting to growth and changes and that, while it seems to spring naturally from the circumstances of his own life, he really had young and growing children in mind, and the many changes they must meet. He wrote and illustrated Hermit Crab's story to show young readers that new experiences are not to be dreaded but are really wonderful opportunities.
