A Journal of the Plague Year

Autor Daniel Defoe
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 27 iun 2020
A Journal of the Plague Year is a book by Daniel Defoe, first published in March 1722. It is an account of one man's experiences of the year 1665, in which the bubonic plague struck the city of London in what became known as the Great Plague of London, the last epidemic of plague in that city. The book is told somewhat chronologically, though without sections or chapter headings, and with frequent digressions and repetitions. Presented as an eyewitness account of the events at the time, it was written in the years just prior to the book's first publication in March 1722. Defoe was only five years old in 1665 when the Great Plague took place, and the book itself was published under the initials H. F. and is probably based on the journals of Defoe's uncle, Henry Foe, who, like 'H. F.', was a saddler who lived in the Whitechapel district of East London. In the book, Defoe goes to great pains to achieve an effect of verisimilitude, identifying specific neighborhoods, streets, and even houses in which events took place. Additionally, it provides tables of casualty figures and discusses the credibility of various accounts and anecdotes received by the narrator. The book is often compared to the actual, contemporary accounts of the plague in the diary of Samuel Pepys. Defoe's account, which appears to include much research, is far more systematic and detailed than Pepys's first-person account.A Journal of the Plague Year is a book by Daniel Defoe, first published in March 1722. Imagine a plague so horrific, only forty percent of the population lived to tell the tale. Written as a first-person account of the world's most dangerous pandemic, the mysterious narrator bears witness to a society that has seemingly given up hope during terrifying times.

. From mounting death tolls, to horrific bodily ailments, contracting the Black Plague was considered a fate worse than death. Combining his own experiences within each of the two stories, the enigmatic narrator, known only by the initials, H.F., gives a dark and detailed account of one of the most horrific pandemics in human history. H.F. recounts two stories of uniquely different Londoners doing everything in their power to avoid contracting the plague. One story tells of a poor man who takes shelter on his boat, away from his infected wife and child. This man uses his boat to bring provisions to various communities by the water, doing all he can to support sick families. The other story is describes a group of three men, each of different professions, who escape the village in an effort to survive together off the land.

Bearing uncanny similarities to the Coronavirus spreading across the globe today, A Journal of the Plague Year is, perhaps, a comforting reminder that times could always be worse.

This version contains an informative new note about the author and a professionally typeset manuscript. With a stunning and eye-catching cover, this Mint Edition book is a beautiful edition to any classics bookshelf.

Recenzii

The London of an earlier period - 1665 - is brought vividly and pungently back to life.
Gruesomely compulsive reading.

Notă biografică

Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) was an English author known famously for his novel, Robinson Crusoe; the novel has been widely credited as being the first of its kind in pioneering the realistic fiction genre. Defoe was a prolific writer, publishing over 300 works of literature to his name and widely thought of as a prominent figure in various social and political circles during his time. His opinions were never received with immediate certainty as Defoe spent a significant amount of time in jail for writing many pieces of political propaganda. A Journal of the Plague Year was widely debated on its merit as a fictional novel. Editors primarily believed it to be a work of non-fiction, portraying society's lived experience in London circa 1665 through the perspective of Daniel Defoe's uncle, Henry Defoe. It was eventually published as a true work of historical fiction. Daniel Defoe was thought of to have lived dangerously, always on the run from creditors as he had accumulated a substantial amount of debt. As such, it was rumored that he died most likely hiding from debt collectors.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

Defoe's classic reconstruction of the Great Plague of 1665 is the most compelling account of natural disaster in all literature. Narrated by an imaginary 'Citizen who continued all the while in London', A Journal of the Plague Year scans the streets and alleyways of the stricken capital in its effort to record the appalling suffering of plague victims. At once horrifying and movingly compassionate, it is a nightmare vision of the modern city laid to waste.
