A Lost Lady

Autor Willa Cather
en Limba Engleză Paperback
In an atmosphere as individual and full of color as that of the old manor-houses in Russian novels, Miss Cather unfolds this romance of the old west in her book, "A Lost Lady;" not the west of the pioneer this time, but of the railroad aristocracy that grew up when the great transcontinental lines were being built across the plains, in her new book to be published this month by Alfred A. Knopf. A whole epoch lives again in the little group of people so wonderfully pictured here; in this story of an incorruptable man and the beautiful woman who was his wife, and of the house in which their moving drama took place. In every page there is a melancholy beauty, a thrilling pathos, it underlies the easy brilliance of the writting, the vivacity with which Miss Cather gives us all the idiosyncracies of that lavish, generous, careless era. Through the whole story one figure stands out with irresistible fascination-the figure of Marian Forrester, full of feminine mystery and charm, inscrutable in her weakness and her reckless courage. She is one of Miss Cather s greatest triumps.

Notă biografică

Willa Sibert Cather (December 7, 1873 - April 24, 1947) was an American writer who achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, including O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), and My Ántonia (1918). In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), a novel set during World War I. While Cather enjoyed the novels of George Eliot, the Brontës, and Jane Austen, she regarded most women writers with disdain, judging them overly sentimental and mawkish. Cather admired Henry James as a "mighty master of language and keen student of human actions and motives." She generally preferred past literary masters to contemporary writers. Some particular favorites were Dickens, Thackeray, Emerson, Hawthorne, Balzac, Flaubert, and Tolstoy. Although Cather began her writing career as a journalist, she made a distinction between journalism, which she saw as being primarily informative, and literature, which she saw as an art form. Cather's work is often marked by its nostalgic tone, her subject matter and themes drawn from memories of her early years on the American plains. Cather graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She lived and worked in Pittsburgh for ten years, supporting herself as a magazine editor and high school English teacher. At the age of 33 she moved to New York City, her primary home for the rest of her life, though she also traveled widely and spent considerable time at her summer residence on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick.

A portrait of a woman who reflects the conventions of her age even as she defies them and whose transformations embody the decline and coarsening of the American frontier.

Recenzii

"This 1923 novel is among the best examples of Cather’s experiment with minimalism and one of her finest works overall. As such, it deserves an edition produced to the highest standards of textual scholarship. It has found one here."—Choice
