A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom Christ

Autor St John of the Cross Traducere de David Lewis
en Paperback – 30 apr 2007
"A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul is St. John of the Cross¿s most famous work. Composed mainly while he was imprisoned for refusing to follow his superior¿s orders, the poem reflects the suffering and punishments he endured at that time, sufferings that would influence all of his subsequent work. In A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul, the poet uses the metaphor of a bride and groom separated and then reunited to represent the soul and Jesus Christ. This richness of imagery has led some to declare this work to be one of the finest ever written in Spanish. Includes the complete poem, followed by a detailed explanation of each line and phrase.Spanish mystic and poet ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS (1542¿1591) played a major role in the Catholic Reformation of the 16th century, and produced several renowned writings, including his Spiritual Canticle, The Dark Night of the Soul, and Sayings of Love and Peace."

Notă biografică

John of the Cross (1542 - 14 December 1591) was a Carmelite friar, priest of converso origin, a mystic, and Roman Catholic saint. He was a major figure of the Spanish Counter-Reformation and is one of thirty-six Doctors of the Church. John of the Cross is well-known for his writings. Both his poetry and his studies on the development of the soul are considered the summit of mystical Spanish literature and among the greatest works of all Spanish literature.John of the Cross is considered one of the foremost poets in Spanish. Although his complete poems add up to fewer than 2500 verses, two of them, the Spiritual Canticle and the Dark Night of the Soul, are widely considered masterpieces of Spanish poetry, both for their formal style and their rich symbolism and imagery. His theological works often consist of commentaries on the poems. All the works were written between 1578 and his death in 1591.
