Descriere
Lyrical, poetic folk horror high fantasy, A Sword of Bronze and Ashes combines the raw ferocity of Celtic myth with the lived experience of parents and children.
Kanda leads a peaceful life as a farmer in the beautiful, wild country she loves. She has a kind-hearted husband, Dellet, and three clever, fiercely independent daughters, Sal, Calian, and Morna. A good life well-lived – until she wakes one fine summer morning to find an ancient evil has returned from her past. In an attempt to keep them innocent, Kanda refuses to tell her family what is happening, but persuades them flee their home into the wild wood. So begins a terrifying flight through a landscape that is both the family’s beloved home and playground and utterly, impossibly new, dangerous and strange, filled suddenly with shadows and monsters.
The three girls are young and carefree, Dellet is a kind man and certainly no warrior, Kanda alone has the strength to protect them. But to doing so she must reveal her most closely guarded secrets — secrets that threaten her relationship with her husband and her children, for, like any parent, Kanda has things in her past that she does not want her family to know. Her older daughters, Sal and Calian, are young women in Kanda’s own image, strong and determined; as the darkness rises around them they too reveal hidden secrets, Calian as a brilliant warrior, Sal as a gifted healer and mage. Now mother and daughters stand together, three bright swords fighting against evil. But, again like any parent, Kanda is torn between joy at her children’s bravery and horror that they are now in even greater danger. She wants only to keep them protected, innocent; they want to stand beside her to fight the monsters. And her husband cannot bear to see his daughters go into battle. Faced with unimaginable evil, he can only blame Kanda. Any normal mother would keep her own children safe.
Torn apart by grief, arguing, guilty, the family are pursued to the cursed mountain of Mal Anwen. Dellet has long dreamed he will die there; Kanda once swore she would rather die than return to the secrets she keeps buried on the mountain’s slopes. But Kanda is now mired in blood to her eyeballs, and Calian longs only to shed yet more blood. Their home has been destroyed, their good peaceful life turned to bitter ashes. Everything dies. All light fades. When thunder breaks the stones of Mal Anwen, that is a sign the world will end.
But the love between parents and children is strong enough to rebuild anything.

'It is a mind-blowing book. I don't think I've ever read anything quite like it. it's a story about the ragged, tearing wound you get when high myth gets stitched to the grind of mundane life. It's incredible.' Adrian Tchaikovsky

'A peculiar, ambitious novel [...] A Sword of Bronze and Ashes blends the register of myth with the bruisingly quotidian. Fascinatingly difficult to categorise.' Locus Magazine
'A wonderful blend of fantasy and horror, Anna Smith Spark never seems to disappoint when it comes to her luscious prose and her wholly engaging storytelling. This one captivated me right from the very beginning and takes you on a dark fairy tale journey like no other. At times heartbreaking, at others hopeful. There's a disturbing underlying mystery that will blow your mind when all is said and done. Along the way Anna Smith Spark makes us sweat as she strengthens our connection to the main characters through deeply personal dialogue. This book will challenge many preconceptions with regard to what a hero should look and behave like, and that is a very very good thing. I hope to read many more stories set in this multi-layered and captivating world.' Out of this World SFF
'A Sword of Bronze and Ashes is a highly emotional story, using the epicness of grimdark to tell the story of a woman, a mother. Another excellent book by the Queen of Grimdark.' JamReads
'The most refreshingly unique voice that I can recall reading for a long time.' Lynn's Book Blog
'A Sword of Bronze and Ashes is a novel written by a writer who is at the top of their game, who has their own unique voice, and take on the grimdark, high fantasy, and horror genres. I fully expect her to go from strength to strength and dominate these genres for the next few years. Recommended.' Concatenation
'5 stars! Anna Smith Spark’s prose is remarkable. Her novels possess a distinctive, lyrical timbre, and that’s especially apparent in this first in a new series, which reads like the translation of some soaring medieval allegory. [A Sword of Bronze and Ashes] is eerie and violent, a woman-centred epic with few characters and locations, nonetheless filled with wonder and humanity.' SFX Magazine (SFX Loves, November 2023)
