Acoustic Investigation of Complex Seabeds: SpringerBriefs in Oceanography

Autor Jacques Yves Guigné, Philippe Blondel
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 20 feb 2017
Offshore drilling and constructions require exact knowledge of the geophysical properties of the seabed and sub-seabed, as unexpected objects can slow down or halt projects. This book presents the state-of-the-art in acoustic exploration of the seabed and sub-seabed, from initial designs in the 1980s to commercial contracting and operation of the Acoustic Corer™ in the last decade. The Acoustic Corer™ is a high-definition commercial acoustic sub-bottom imaging system, producing an “acoustic core” within which sub-seabed sedimentary characteristics and discrete buried objects larger than 0.5 m can be identified and mapped. It makes use of the innovative JYG-cross design, inspired by seismic reflection and uses Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) multi-angle scattering in and within the seabed to deliver unprecedented imagery. This book was written by the inventor of these concepts, a known specialist in seabed acoustics, with help from an experienced academic and author. It is intended first and foremost as a “how-to” guide for offshore industries looking at techniques to make the installation of different types of structures safe and efficient.

Recenzii

“This book is designed for experienced investigators, and comprises complex ideas where it is assumed that the basics of underwater acoustics, seismic prospecting and geophysics are known by the reader. It presents an intriguing subject, and may point the way to filling the gap of mapping scales from bathymetry and topography maps to a subsurface and more volumetric understanding.” (Tim Le Bas, Underwater Technology, Vol. 36 (1), 2019)

Caracteristici

This book will be a "how-to" guide to offshore industries (oil and gas, renewables, harbour building) looking at techniques to make their offshore installations safe and efficient By drawing on innovative acoustic approaches, this book will also be useful as a reference textbook highlighting the design, refinement and commercial adoption of a new approach to acoustic interrogation of the seabed and sub-seabed, bridging the gap between research and application This Springer Brief combines the novelty of the technique with the accessibility of its presentation, reaching out to a wide audience Includes supplementary material: sn.pub/extras
